zodiac

The name derives from a Greek word meaning "a little animal". The zodiac is a zone of the heavens which contains the paths of the sun, moon, and principal planets. It is divided into twelve parts of 30 degrees each, which are named for constellations. Each division was originally named for the constellations which it contained. However, the stars follow a sidereal year which is about 24 minutes longer than a solor year. As a result, the constellations shift westward by about one degree every 72 years. The zodiac was initially a division of the year, i.e. twelve months. Today it is more associated with astrological prediction. Any astrologer who believes that it is the position of the stars that sets your fate may be distraught to learn that now the sun is not among the stars of the Aries constellation until it is in the path named for Taurus.
