Yugoslavia, former republics of

Days of the Republic, November 29-30. Commemorates the proclaimation of the Socialist republic in 1945 following the defeat of the Nazis. Also called Independence Day.
Republic Day, April 7. Anniversary of the establishment of the Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia in 1963.
Fighter's Day, July 4. Memorializes those who died in defense of the nation.
Youth Day, May 25. Celebrated on the birthday of Marshall Tito.

Public holidays   The public holidays of Yugoslavia prior to its civil war are New Year's Day, May Day (May 1-2), Fighter's Day (July 4), and Days of the Republic (Nov. 29-30).

Serbia

Feast of Saint Sava, January 14. Anniversary of the death of Sava in 1237. Saint Sava was a king's son and built schools and monasteries throughout Serbia. Observed with feasting, music, and dancing. A children's festival.
