Special Days
Some special days in the United States are made by presidential proclamation
to commemorate an event.
Other days are sponsored by specific organizations attempting to
raise awareness of an important issue.
Perseid Meteor Shower, August 11. An annual meteor shower occuring near August 11 every year when the Earth's
orbit collides with a trail of debris from the Swift-Tuttle Comet.
The last time the comet passed through our solar system was in 1993.
dog days, July 3 to August 11. The typically hot and humid time of summer occurring during the period that
Sirius, the Dog Star, rises at the same time as the sun.
Northern hemisphere only.
League of Nations Day, January 10. The League of Nations was created on January 10, 1920, and was replaced by the
United Nations on April 18, 1946.
U.S. Civil War ends, April 9, 1865. Robert E. Lee surrendered to U. S. Grant on this day.
North Pole reached, April 6, 1909. Admiral Robert Peary reached the North Pole on this day.
First woman to reach the North Pole, April 5, 1971. Fran Phipps became the first woman to reach the North Pole on this day in 1971.
Lewis and Clark expedition began, May 14, 1804.
Carnival. The Carnival season typically begins with Epiphany and
ends with Shrove Tuesday.
May have origins with Lupercalia and Festival of Fools.
Bring Your Daughter to Work Day, fourth Thursday in April (Apr 22, 2004).
Sweetest Day, third Saturday in October (Oct 16, 2004).
Secretary's Day, on a Wednesday in April. A part of secretaries week.
Boss's Day, October 16.
Grandparents' Day, September 7.
Earth Day, March 21 or April 22. A day for promoting conservation and environmental awareness of the Earth's resources.
The first international observance was on April 22, 1970.
Observed in Western Europe and North America.
International Childhood Cancer Day, February 15. Annual event
organised by the International Confederation of Childhood Cancer Parent
Oganisations (ICCCPO) and sponsored by the UK charity Cancer Research UK. Events happening worldwide to raise funds for and
awareness of childhood cancer.
Leif Ericsson Day, October 9. Celebrates accomplishments of Scandinavian Americans.
Mother Goose Day, May 1. Day for appreciating the classic nursery rhymes of Mother Goose.
