Puerto Rico
The Commonwealth of Puerto Rico is one of
two United States Comonwealth Territories.
Constitution Day, July 25. Commemorates the anniversary of the day in 1952 when Puerto Rico became a commonwealth
with the proclamation of their constitution.
The United States had acquired the island after the Spanish-American war, and did not
allow self-government until the 1950's, when their constitution was written.

Commonwealth Day, or
Occupation Day in commemoration of the US troops landing on the island on this
day in 1898.
Barbosa Day, July 27. Celebrates the birthday of José Celso Barbosa (b.1857).
Birthday of Eugenio Maria de Hostos, January 11. Honors the Puerto Rican patriot and philosopher.
De Diego Day, April 16. Celebrates the birthday of patriot Joséde Diego (b.1867).
Muñoz Rivera Day, July 17. Celebrates the birthday of Luis Muñoz Rivera (1859-1916), patriot and jounalist.
Memorial Day, May 28.
Ponce de Leon Day, August 12. A festival dedicated to Ponce de Leon's arrival in 1508.
San Juan Day, June 24. Observance of Saint John's Day and commemoration of the Battle of San Juan,
in which the Americans defeated the Spanish.
Emancipation Day, March 22. Anniversary of the abolition of slavery in this nation.
Discovery Day, November 19. Christopher Columbus discovered Puerto Rico on his second voyage to the west in 1493.
