Camões Memorial Day, June 10. Memorializes the death of Portugese poet Luiz Vaz de Camões (1524-1580) who is
best known for his epic poem,
Os Lusiadas.
Republic Day, October 5. Commemorates the establishment of a republican form of government in 1910 when the
monarchy that had been in power since the 11th century was overthrown in a bloodless
revolution.
Liberty Day, April 25. Anniversary of the peaceful military revolution in 1974 that overthrew the
fascist regime.

New Year's Day, Carnival (Shrove Tuesday), Good Friday,
Liberty Day, Labor Day (May 1), Portugal Day, Corpus Christi, Assumption,
Republic Day, All Saints' Day, Restoration of the Independence (Dec 1),
Immaculate Conception, and Christmas.
Lisbon also observes the feast of St Anthony (Jun 13), and Porto observes the feast
of St John the Baptist.
