Israel

The State of Israel is in the Middle East. See also Judaism.

Independence Day, Iyar 5 (Apr 27, 2004). Occurs in April or May. "Yom Ha'atzma'ut". On May 14, 1948, Palestinian Jews declared independence from British rule. The Hebrew calendar date was Iyar 5, 5708.
Remembrance Day, Iyar 4 (Apr 26, 2004). Honors all Israeli soldiers who have died in wars.
National Day, occurs in May. Anniversary of the declaration of independence on May 14, 1948.
Jerusalem Reunification Day, May 12.
Hebrew University Day, occurs near April 1. Commemorates the opening of the university in Jerusalem in 1925.
Holocaust Memorial Day, Nisan 27 (Apr 19, 2004). "Yom Hashoah". This is a memorial day for the Jews who died in World War II. On April 10, 1945, Allied troops liberated the concentration camp at Buchenwald, Germany, where about 56,000 prinsoners had died. The date of liberation on the Hebrew calendar was Nisan 27, 5705.
Balfour Declaration Day, November 2. Commemorates the establishment of a Jewish national home on this day in 1917.

Italy

The Italian Republic consumes a European peninsula extending into the Mediterranean Sea.

Anniversary of the Republic, June 2. Commemorates the establishment in 1946 of the Italian Republic. Also known as Republic Day or Constitution Day.
Day of Conciliation, February 11. Anniversary of the confirmation in 1929 of the treaty between the Holy See and Italy, which gave international status to the state of Vatican City. Translated from the Italian "Giorno della Conciliazione".

Festa del Redentore, third Sunday in July (Jul 18, 2004).
Natale di Roma, April 21. Celebrates the founding of Rome in 753 BC by Romulus who supposedly began laying the foundations on this day.
Joust of the Quintana, first Sunday in August (Aug 1, 2004).
Palio Del Golfo, second Sunday in August (Aug 8, 2004).
Saint Mark's Day. Observed in Venice to honor Saint Mark.
Befana Day, January 6. Epiphany.
Christmas, December 25. The "Urn of Fate" has been used at Christmas since Roman times.
Santo Stefano, December 26. Boxing Day.

Public holidays   New Year's Day, Epiphany, Easter Monday, Liberation Day, Labor Day (May 1), Assumption, All Saints' Day, National Unity Day (Nov 5), Immaculate Conception, Christmas, and Santo Stefano. Many local towns also have a public holiday on the feast day of their patron saint.

Ivory Coast

The Republic of Côte d'Ivoire is on the west coast of Africa. The official language is French, but many African languages are also spoken.

Independence Day, December 7. The Ivory Coast became fully independent on August 7, 1960. Independence Day has since been moved to December 7.
