Commemorates Saint Stephen, the first Christian King of Hungary, who ruled between 997-1038.
Today is also the "Day of the New Bread",
and the first bread from the new harvest is baked especially for this day.

Hungary declared its independence on October 23, 1989,
on the anniversary of an unsuccessful revolt in 1956 against Soviet rule.
