Feast of Fools
Feast of Fools, near January 1. A mock religious celebration from the Middle Ages.
Known in France as
fête des fous.
During the celebration, the lower clergy were allowed their revenge for
subordination by taking over the church.
The dressed in feminine costumes or inside out ecclesiastical garments,
chose one to be the fools' bishop, chanted hymns, ate sausages on the altar,
played dice at its foot, burned old shoes, and preached humorous sermons.
Festival of the Ass
Festival of the Ass, January 14. From the French "fête de l'âne".
A satirical festival in France celebrated in some towns during the middle ages.
In the celebration a pretty girl rode an ass, apparently to represent Mary
on the Flight to Egypt.
The ass was led into a church, made to kneel, and a Mass and hymns were
sung in its praise.
At the end the priest and congregation brayed three times in honor of the
animal that saved Mary from Herod and borne Jesus into Jerusalem.
