Cyprus

The Republic of Cyprus is an island in the Mediterranean Sea near Turkey. The population is about three-fourths Greek speaking and one-fourth Turkish speaking. Since 1955 there has been a movement among Greek Cypriots to unify with Greece.

Independence Day, October 1.
Feast of the Submersion of the Holy Cross, January 6. See Epiphany.
Green Monday, first Monday of Lent (Mar 1, 2004). Observed with an outdoor lunch of bread, olives, and vegetables.
Kataklysmos, June 7. Festival of the flood observed in seaside towns.
Peace and Freedom Day, July 20. Anniversary of the Turkish invasion in 1974.
