The Republic of Cuba is a collection of
islands in the Caribbean Sea.
The official language is Spanish.
Cuba belonged to Spain until it was turned over to the Unites States in 1898
after the Spanish-American War.
Independence Day, May 20. Anniversary of the transfer of power from Spain in 1902.
Beginning of Independence Wars Day. Commemorates Fidel Castro's guerrilla
wars in the 1950s.
Revolution Day, July 26. Commemorates Fidel Castro's opposition to the Batista military dictatorship on
this day in 1953.
Liberation Day, January 1. Commorates the revolution of 1959 led by Fidel Castro which ousted dictator
Fulgencio Batista.
